The application of 3D printing technology in 2021 tokyo olympic
Due to the Covid-19, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been delayed to 2021. Began on July 23, 2021, and ended on August 8. During the period time of Tokyo Olympic, we are not only impressed by the athletes’ excellent performance around the world but also the applications of 3D printing technology in the Olympic Games.
The material of the podium is made of recycled plastic from more than 2000 collecting boxes donated by department stores and schools. They were recycled then manufactured in to filament and made 98 podiums by FDM 3D printers. Each platform was consisted of series of 1.5kgs plastic cubes printed by the plastic filament. The design concepts of the overall model are: sustainability, 3D printing, recycling, and reuse. Therefore, after the event, P&G plans to recycle plastics and give them a third life as packaging for P&G products. At the same time, the designer team hopes to use some parts of the podium for display or even re-production.
French Athletics 3D which is a professional sports equipment customization company used the FDM Dual 3D printer to print the gas gun holder to help their athlete Celine Goberville to hit the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Celine Goberville won the silver medal in the women's 10-meter gas gun at the 2012 London Olympics. And In the European Shooting Championships, she won the bronze medal with the first version of the holder printed by 3D printing technology. So the Athletics 3D specially designed the gas gun holder for her to help she to hit the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Gold medal.
Actually since Nike’s Zoom Superfly Elite running shoes helped Shirley Ann Fraser Price won 2 medals in 2016 Rio Olympics. Then the ADIDAS started their own 3D printing footwear and worked closely with Carbon to develop the 4D series running shoes to meet the needs of every wearer for movement, cushioning and comfort.
Nowadays, 3D printing technology is widely used in sports projects. It will help the athletes to be faster, higher and stronger.
