What are the raw materials for 3D printing technology?

There are a wide variety of raw materials used in 3D printing technology, with over 200 different materials available for selection. These materials can be roughly divided into several categories based on their properties and uses, including petrochemical products, biological products, metal products, and lime concrete products. The following are some commonly used 3D printing materials and their characteristics in the industry:
 

1. ABS plastic: This is one of the most commonly used 3D printing materials in FDM technology. ABS plastic is known for its excellent strength and durability, and is suitable for manufacturing various practical items, such as toys and home decorations. This material is usually provided in the form of fine threads and printed through a heated nozzle. Controlling the nozzle temperature is crucial to ensuring successful printing, as ABS needs to solidify immediately after spraying.
 

2. PLA plastic: PLA is another popular 3D printing material, especially suitable for consumer grade 3D printers. It is a biodegradable and environmentally friendly material that can be used without the need for a heating bed, making the printing process more convenient. PLA plastic comes in multiple colors, including semi transparent and fully transparent materials.
 

3. Acrylic: Acrylic, also known as PMMA or organic glass, is a transparent or semi transparent 3D printing material. Its surface is smooth and suitable for printing models that require transparent effects, such as orthodontic models.
 

4. Nylon aluminum powder material: By adding aluminum powder to nylon powder, this material exhibits a metallic luster during the printing process. It is commonly used for printing creative products such as decorations and jewelry.


5. Ceramics: Ceramic powders are printed using SLS technology and can be fired at high temperatures to produce glazed ceramic products, such as personalized cups.


6. Resin: Resin is a key raw material in photocurable 3D printing technology. Photosensitive resin can solidify and form under UV irradiation, and can be used to create high-precision models, such as biological models or medical models.


7. Glass: Glass powder is also being attempted for 3D printing. By using SLS technology, glass materials can be used to produce various and diverse products.


8. Stainless steel: Stainless steel powder can be 3D printed using SLS technology to create sturdy and durable products. Stainless steel can be used to make models, artworks, and various functional and decorative items.


9. Other metals: Metal materials such as silver, gold, and titanium are also printed using SLS technology. Gold and silver can be used to make jewelry, while titanium is commonly used in high-end 3D printing, such as the manufacturing of aircraft components.


10. Color printing and other materials: Color 3D printing can be achieved through various methods, including using a multi nozzle printer to print multiple color materials simultaneously, or using inkjet printing principles to mix dye and adhesive and inject them into the printing material powder for curing. These technologies can create colorful 3D objects, and commonly used printing materials include resin, polypropylene, and ABS.
